Ten miles of two way forest road winding along the banks of the Black
Water of Dee between the Bennan and Clatteringshaws. For most of its
length the Drive follows the course of an old drove road featured in
"The Raiders" a romance by Samuel Rutherford Crockett. In the
surrounding forest red and roe deer graze on short vegetation whilst
overhead buzzards, sparrowhawks and ravens can be seen with crossbills
and siskins feeding on tree cones. You may even catch sight of the
elusive pine martin. Art works such as the "Labyrinth" can also be seen
along the Raiders Road.
The Raiders Road Forest Drive can be started from Clatteringshaws Visitor Centre in Clatteringshaws which is part of Galloway Forest Park. New Galloway is the nearest town or village.
