Details This large conifer woodland area has many diverse features of heritage scattered throughout, including Polmaddy settlement, a classic example of an early Galloway Village, before the improvements and clearances of the 18th and 19th Century. The Polmaddy burn lazily snakes its way through the woodland which uncovers wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. Castlemaddy Wood is part of Galloway Forest Park. St. John's Town of Dalry and Carsphairn are the nearest towns or villages. From Newton Stewart: Take the A712 signposted New Galloway. From New Galloway: Take the A713 signposted Carsphairn, Castlemaddy is opposite the little village of Polmaddy.
